Materials for Painting in Gouache

Gouache paints

(Artist or Professional grade recommended. Not “Himi Gouache” or “Acrylic Gouache”)

These convenience links are to Winsor & Newton Designer’s Gouache on Jerry’s Artarama; other professional brands and suppliers are fine.

Ultramarine Blue

Cadmium Yellow Light or Pale *

Perelyne Maroon or Alizarin Crimson

Burnt Sienna

Winsor Red or Pure Red (Pyrrole Red, like Cad Red, but cheaper)

Permanent White
Large tube of white can be convenient:

* If you’re concerned about using Cadmium colors, I suggest Brilliant Yellow (Hansa Yellow) rather than the expensive “Cadmium Free” branded colors

Watercolor palette

with reasonably large mixing area (We don’t need a lot of wells.)
Some examples:

Creative Mark Folding Plastic Palette

Mijello Fusion sealed

I use a Masterson “Sta-wet Handy Palette”, it keeps the paint from drying out:

Short handled synthetic brushes

suitable for acrylic or mixed media

(example: the Beste line from Jerry’s Artarama):

1/2” flat

1/2″ angular

1/4” flat (or 7mm shader) (ideally, two of these)

1/8” flat (or 4mm shader)

#2 (2 mm) round (#2 nadel round)

Doesn’t have to be these specific brushes. Similar brushes in similar sizes are fine.

Watercolor pad, block or sketchbook

9×12”, 8×10″, or similar, hot press or cold press, at least 140lb/300gsm or heavier;

Spray mister

(atomizer) for keeping paint wet on the palette;

Water jar

for cleaning brushes (plastic peanut butter jar, for example, plastic cup will do)
